The Clean Lakes Alliance will be hosting a seed collection event throughout the grounds of the Monastery and involves collecting the seeds of native plants that have gone to flower. The Monastery has a partnership with Dane County Parks which has a very robust seed collection program where they sort, treat, and package the collected seeds. Seeds are then used to create or restore native plantings and prairie spaces throughout Dane county. The more native plantings and prairie spaces we have near our water bodies, the healthier they'll be. Seed collections are always a volunteer favorite of Clean Lakes Alliance because you can go at your own pace, do it solo or walk with a small group, and learn a new native plant or two along the way.

    For a 30-45 minute tour of the Allis school pollinator and community garden and composting and another nearby community garden.

Following the release of Michael Pollan's book (2018) and documentary (2022) on how psychedelics can "change your mind," it is important that the community is aware of the existing research and current available treatments involving psychedelics. Many people are not aware that the University of Wisconsin - Madison hosts a number of clinical psychedelic trials and has been doing so for the last 10 years. Dr. CHANTELLE THOMAS and Dr. TODD KAMMERZELT will provide a general overview of the different psychedelic compounds that have been researched for various treatment indications and highlight what forms of treatment are currently available to the general population.

Three of the authors of the book “Bending Granite” – a collection of stories by 30+ authors from industry, government, education, healthcare, private and public companies, armed services, family farms, and more- will present select stories from their recent book.  MICHAEL WILLIAMSON, KATHLEEN PARIS and TOM MOSGALLER, all of whom are agents of change, with bruises and scars to prove it, will share portions of engaging stories from the book that remain relevant to today’s gnarly problems and reveal how we all grapple with bending granite.  Without getting into the weeds of change science, but through storytelling, the authors will share some timeless stories and universal lessons all realized right here in Dane County.

Osteria is excited to host the Rotary Culinary Arts Fellowship on Wednesday, September 27^th at 6pm for a restaurant takeover with an ‘adventurous’ menu! We will hear about each course, expertly cultivated by their James Beard award winning chef. The five-course menu will be seasonal and fresh, with new items to try, including:

• Antipasto: house-cured charcuterie and giardiniera with cheese, olives, quince jam, honey, & grilled bread
• Salad: ‘fancy’ salad course
• Primi: house-made pastas (one vegetarian and one meat)
• Secondi: fish and meat
• Dolci: budino di caramello (Osteria Papavero’s butterscotch pudding with whipped cream and cocoa powder)

Please join us at 6pm to mix and mingle for the antipasto course. The bar will be open throughout the evening for you to purchase drinks. We will sit for the family-style meal around 6:45pm.

The cost for food (including tax and gratuity and Rotary’s processing fee) is $129 per person. Please confirm your spot and make your payment by September 15^th.

Dr. KAIPING CHEN will map the landscape of AI's current applications and its pervasive yet often unnoticed presence in our daily lives. She will explore how these applications can enhance human well-being, while also delving into pressing issues of privacy and safety that accompany AI technology. To conclude, Dr. Chen will introduce a framework for “Responsible Innovation,” which will guide us in contemplating how AI technologies can be developed and assessed to meet the needs of various stakeholders, while also fostering broader societal engagement.

UW Madison Law School Dean DAN TOKAJI will discuss current and looming issues in his primary field of Election Law, including election administration, redistricting and campaign finance.  He will also address larger challenges facing our democracy including rising political polarization and what steps might be taken to strengthen constitutional democracy in the U.S.

TOM LYNCH serves as the Director of Transportation for the City of Madison.  He has over 30 years in the transportation field where his planning efforts have resulted in over a half billion dollars of infrastructure improvements in four states. He will review Madison’s transportation history and the exciting new initiatives being implemented, including BRT, Complete Green Streets, Vision Zero, and Passenger Rail planning.
